Benefits of Pets In Senior Communities

Chances are if you live in Austin, you’ve noticed it’s a dog town. Restaurants, breweries, and parks are full of them! And that’s no different in senior living communities. Whether it’s residents’ pets or visiting therapy animals, senior living communities love to incorporate our furry friends into the lives of older adults.

It may seem obvious, but we can’t discount the benefits of a pet’s companionship. In a dog friendly city like Austin, just walking your pet around the neighborhood can offer an opportunity to talk to neighbors. If you’re kind enough to let your pet sleep with you, that little furry pal can help alleviate anxiety or insomnia. It’s an easy way to receive unconditional love and feel needed.

Unfortunately though, having a pet may become a safety issue or an older adult may not be able to care for an animal. Memory care communities often utilize robotic, lifelike pets – from purring cats to napping dogs – that can help comfort and calm those with dementia. We’ve even seen residents with “pet” armadillos!

These pictures speak for themselves – the CarePatrol team are big time fans of our fur babies!
