When “Back to School” schedules include caring for our parents

By Shelley MacAllister, MSW

School supplies are back on the shelves and “meet the teachers” are around the corner. As many look forward to a new school year, some parents are finding themselves facing the daunting task of managing their children’s AND their parents’ schedules.

Making sure your parents are eating healthy meals, managing their medication, and driving them to appointments takes up so much time. When you are also their main social support, a quick drop-in can turn into much longer. You do it because you care, but there are only so many hours in the day! Over time, the intensity of caregiving can make even the most stoic person crumble.

There are many options available to help. Looking for a senior community where your parents can receive three meals a day, have their medication dispensed and refills managed, and access to transportation for trips to the doctor or shopping, could be your next step. If your parents still aren’t ready to leave their home, there are caregiving companies that can provide some of the services you’ve been managing alone. Working with a trusted senior care advisor can help you navigate the options and find a new solution.
