Benefits of Volunteering

One of the things we talk about a lot here at CarePatrol is the importance of having a sense of purpose. And that goes for all of us, at all ages, not just the seniors we help. A sense of purpose gives us all a reason to get up, get out, and get active – that’s important whether you are 9 or 99.

An easy and satisfying way to find purpose is thru volunteering. According to research released by AmeriCorps, volunteering consistently can improve the mental and physical health of adults over 55+. After two years of service in the Senior Corps, 84 percent of older adults reported improved or stable health, with less symptoms of depression and isolation.

In an increasingly disconnected world, volunteering brings us together and offers us the opportunity to meet people we may not otherwise have met. Organizations such as Meals on Wheels bring vital services to a vulnerable population while non-profts like the Alzheimer’s Association rely on their volunteers to spread the word about their mission.

So how can you get involved? Start small, with a cause you care about. Reach out to organizations that you feel connected with and passionate about. Talk to friends and neighbors – maybe there’s opportunities to get involved together.

Wherever your passion may lie, giving a little bit of our time and attention to others can have last benefits on our own spirits. So what are you waiting for?
