People-Need-Care_Updated

The senior care industry serves a rapidly growing population of older adults and families who need help evaluating senior living and care options.

About 64.6 million Americans were age 65 or older in 2025, according to the latest U.S. Census Bureau population estimates. That is approximately 18.9% of the U.S. population. Census projections show the 65+ population continuing to grow for decades.

For senior care advisors, population growth is only part of the opportunity. Senior housing demand is also rising while new supply remains constrained. In Q2 2026, senior housing occupancy reached 89.9%, and 15 of the 31 primary markets tracked by NIC MAP were at or above 90% occupancy.

These trends create a growing need for professionals who can help families understand local senior living options, compare care levels, and make informed decisions.

Aging Populations Are Driving Senior Care Industry Growth

The U.S. added millions of older adults during the first half of this decade. The latest Census estimates put the 65+ population at approximately 64.6 million in July 2025, up from approximately 53.6 million in the 2020 Census estimate base.

Growth among older age groups is also important. Projections from the Administration for Community Living show the population age 85+ will increase substantially through 2040, creating a larger population likely to face housing, support, and long-term care decisions.

That growth is expected to continue.

2025 64.6M

Growing Senior Living Demand Can Make Finding Suitable Care More Difficult

As demand for senior living and care grows, families may have more options to research, but not necessarily an easier time finding the right one.

Senior housing occupancy reached 89.9% in Q2 2026, according to the National Investment Center for Seniors Housing & Care. At the same time, new construction remains limited, creating added pressure on available inventory in many markets.

For families, availability is only one part of the decision. They also have to consider:

  • The appropriate level of care
  • Location and proximity to loved ones
  • Budget and payment options
  • Community services and amenities
  • Quality, services, and community fit

These factors make a senior living search difficult, especially when a family is making decisions on a short timeline.

This is where market knowledge and experience become valuable. A senior care advisor helps families understand their options, narrow the choices, and move forward with more confidence.
