It’s a huge life transition for all involved and for those of us with stubborn parents, it can be an incredibly touchy subject. But aging is inevitable and being prepared and creating an open line of communication can make the process a lot easier.

So how do you have The Talk?

Be Proactive

It’s never too early to have The Talk. Cognitive and physical changes can come on suddenly and you’ll be in a much better position if you plan for them. Their wishes and their hopes. Coming to the conversation with an open mind and open heart will help you get the right answers.

Be Prepared

You’re reading this blog, so you’re already heading in the right direction! Do your research. Find out where all the documents are – bank statements, VA paperwork, wills. Who is the Power of Attorney and are there Advance Directives? Get your legal paperwork in order and ready. If there are gaps, now is the time to fix them.

Be Loving

Finally, come to the table with a loving heart, both for your parent and yourself.
