We all know that we should brush and floss daily. Most of us have been doing it every day for our entire lives. But can you imagine if you forgot the action? In a memory care, it\u2019s common for caregivers to take over this Activity of Daily Living. Just because you forgot the action doesn\u2019t mean you forgot the feeling.<\/p>\n

When caregivers face resistance in oral hygiene, it\u2019s important to remember little things like water temperature. Or amount of toothpaste. Maybe this is a person who has sensitive gums and doesn\u2019t like an electric toothbrush. Or someone who likes their coffee first and then their teeth brushed. Medications can cause a dry mouth, so maybe teeth brushing is uncomfortable.<\/p>\n

Trying to get to the bottom of why someone would resist this is so important. Older adults are at higher risks for tooth decay, cavities, and tooth loss. Mitigating this risk by practicing good dental habits is just one less thing for caregivers and their loved ones to worry about.<\/p>\n
